Butt Fusion is a welding process used primarily to join thermoplastic pipes (most commonly polyethylene - HDPE). The core principle is to heat the ends of two pipes until they melt, then push them together under pressure. As they cool, the molecules intertwine, creating a seamless, leak-proof, and full-strength joint that is as strong as the pipe itself.

It is the standard method for creating permanent, reliable joints in gas and water distribution systems, as well as industrial pipelines.

The main steps for the preparation

1. Make sure the the power cable requirement .

2. Earthing requirement .

3. Power cable and liquid pressure oil pipe connection.

4. Set the temperature of heating plate.

5. Hydraulic system pressure adjusting.

6. Reducing inserts replacement.

7. Two persons are required to operate the machine.

Butt fusion jointing procedures 

The butt fusion jointing procedures are dived three types as follow:

— single low-pressure fusion jointing procedure;

— dual low-pressure fusion jointing procedure;

— single high-pressure fusion jointing procedure.

 

Single low-pressure fusion jointing procedure is most used normally.

From the ISO 21307 standard show as follow:



If the operators are not proficient in calculation , they can also refer to the Table in DVS 2207-1which is more convenient. 


The intent of this document is to provide operators with the necessary information to accurately and efficiently determine the parameters required for the butt fusion joining procedure.A successful butt fusion weld is defined by the adherence to correct pressure, temperature, and time parameters during the heating phase, followed by an undisturbed cooling period. The cooling stage is critical; it allows the molecular bonds to fully crystallize and achieve their designed strength. Rushing this process will result in a defective joint. Therefore, protecting the joint during cooling is the final and crucial step in ensuring a leak-free, permanent, and reliable pipeline connection. Direct visual inspection is the most efficient method for evaluating welding results. The subsequent pictures explain the reasons for these outcomes.
